British singer / songwriter Ellie Goulding brought her current tour in support of her album Delirium to Montreal’s Bell Centre in front of sound pretty loud fans!
She definitely has a much bigger stage presence than she did last time she was in town headlining a show – lights, dancers, rear projections… and she uses the stage well from side to side. From what I remember of her last show I photographed at Metropolis, she had a mic stand on the stage and mainly stayed behind it.
Due to a small catwalk jetting into the crowd, we had to chose to make our images from either side of the stage, which is somewhat limiting. But when an artist used the entire stage, it really doesn’t make a huge difference. I chose to be on the right side as some quick prep work (ie google image search) showed that she held up microphone more in the right hand than in the left hand. I always prefer to see more of the face than the back of the hand. Sure, artists can and do change mic hands, so it is really a guess. You do your homework and just hope for the best during the show.
The images were made with a mix of a 70-200 and a 24-70 for the wider images. I somewhat regretted not using my 16-35 as I’m more of a fan of show images than artist portraits. I think I need 2 more bodies so I can have lenses ready at all times 😉
Images were made for Virgin Radio, you can see the full gallery right HERE. Below are my fave of that set (mainly the ones in colour) as well as some exclusives (which, you guessed it, are the ones in black and white).
