DEATH FROM ABOVE 1979 DFA1979 DFA 1979

There are so many labels for music in this day and age. I remember when it was rock, hard rock, rap, country and metal. That’s it. Now? So many ways to quantify music. Canadian rockers Death From Above 1979 (known as DFA1979 …cuz you know, acronyms are efficient) were at a very sold out Metropolis last week. I think the best label to describe what DFA1979 does is noise rock. It is like alternative rock, but… uh…noisier. Whatever you want to call it, it is pretty amazing live. Only two guys on stage, but the energy you get from them is just inspiring.

Their lights are constantly moving around, so lining up a shot is difficult as you never know when that light will be back. To top it off, guitarist Jesse is a beast on stage, never stops moving around. Which is why they are just a blast to not only see, but photograph too!

You know when a venue is very packed when you accreditation email says you can not stay past the 3 songs you are allowed to shoot. Typically bands allow us to stay in smaller venues (ie not arenas with assigned seating), but when the capacity is at its max, we must leave… even if we are shooting the other bands. One of the reasons the venue was packed was probably the other main act… Eagles Of Death Metal.

When I compare this show to their 2014 show (which you can see HERE), the lights provided much more drama to the show. I was covering the night for CHOM 97.7, you can check out the full album HERE.

Here are some of my faves of the night, and a few exclusives. The drama in the lights was so nice, many of the shots just convert so well to black and white.
