A diary of Heavy Montreal 2015 | Montreal Concert Photographer

Heavy Montreal hit Parc Jean-Drapeau last weekend… and it was a pretty cheaky affair … specially with Heavy Mania superstar Sexxxy Eddy in the middle of the fun during NOFX.

I had a blast covering the Heavy Montreal festival this past weekend, for so many different reasons.  The main being that my assignment was no assignment.  Capturing stage, crowds, bands, moments, installations and taking the time to take in some music!  Another reason is that I was given the chance to bring along my amazing girlfriend and great photographer to share in the festivities.  Met some great people and overall, it was a pretty sweet festival.

Big props for the new stage setup.  Last year, the festival brought out a smaller (4th) stage in what seemed a bit of a random place.  This year, they configured the site to have the small stage in the middle of the forest (yes, there was a tree in the photo pit).  Sounds odd – and slightly dangerous – but this turned out to be the best setup for fans and bands alike.  From circle pits around trees, fun light setups, some of the more memorable shows happened there… as well as a notable big heavy group hug orchestrated by Exes for Eyes on Sunday afternoon.

The festival has some of the best photographers in the city, so I kept my band images to a minimum.  Didn’t want to take up too much room that would have them missing their shots.  I bounced from area to area, stopping in a few pits to cover some legends like Marky Ramone and Iggy Pop, some classics like Lamb of God and a few randoms here and there.

I’ll let the images tell the story… and there are a few of them ;).

Starting off with my favorite shot of Iggy Pop… pushing 70, he is still amazing on stage

I’m always looking forward to Heavy Montreal.  I was a bit skeptical about them moving from 2 to 3 days, and while some people said that cutting a day would mean a better lineup over a shorter period of time, the festival turned into more of an experience with much more ambiance.  Well, I think so. 🙂

Time to count the days until Heavy Montreal 2016!
